The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, Prosserman JCC, and Schwartz/Reisman Centre benefited instantly from the impact of the program. Turning back the clock to February 2011, the camp team began a thorough search for it’s new assistant camp director. While the applications were plentiful, the hiring committee wanted to ensure no stone was left unturned. With the rapid expansion of The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, expectations were high. The vacancy coincided with Phil’s first seminar in Philadelphia with his newly created group. With networking at the forefront of the program, the seed was planted – we were looking for a motivated, proven, qualified staff member to help grow our camp into the largest camp the city has yet to see. While Phil was only 1 of 2 Canadians in the cohort, he began to inquire with his new network about the possibilities of a new lead. It wasn’t until the middle of the seminar, while at the National Museum of American Jewish History was he approached by Mallory Saks, assistant director of Camp Poyntelle Lewis Village, with a reference for Lauren Cohn. While the entire interview process was long and competitive, it was a clear choice that Lauren Cohn was the perfect candidate for the job.

Networking alone would have made this experience worthwhile for everyone involved, however it is only 1 of the core teaching values of the fellowship. Multiple ideas, workshops, modules, programs and systems have been utilized already at camp and the JCC’s and many others are still to come.

As the last seminar came to an end at the 2012 JCCA Biennial, the next step of their fellowship has only begun as Merrin Alumni strive in their future endeavours within their agencies, not only reaching out to teens, but to their communities at large .While Phil’s story speaks about his specific journey, there are 14 other fellows, each with their own unique adventure, equally memorable and impacftul to their communities to share.

Phil and his fellow fellows are eager and excited to share their experiences, don’t hesitate to contact Phil to hear more about his incredible, uplifting experience or to find out more about what the Prosserman JCC and Schwartz/Reisman Centre have to offer.

Here’s a snippet of an article from YMCA Camp Seymour in America:

Staff pick up customer service skills interacting with parents and campers during camp check-in and check-out days. They utilize their creativity, brainstorm with others, enhance their ability to problem solve and create a valuable network of postive peers on their way to other successful careers. Camp staff unplug from cel phones, social media and screen time, and connect with peers and kids through face to face interactions. You could take the internship for the [MP in Ottawa] or you could come and work at camp, I wouldn’t consider many other options, if I were you.

In Hebrew, we say farewell with the word l’hitraot – “hope to see you soon” because we never say goodbye for good.

Today, it is with extreme sadness that we say l’hitraot to Mariah Unger.

As many of you know, over the last few months, Mariah has been battling cancer with infinite bravery, humour and tremendous will. Her positive outlook, proudly and prominently displayed on facebook, towards “the C word” as she called it, inspired others – including myself – to fully enjoy life regardless of the obstacles that may arise. On January 25th, 2012 Mariah unfortunately passed away, leaving behind empty hearts, but more importantly, memories that will forever be engrained in The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp’s history.

Throughout my recent journey to Israel, our Jewish educator and tour guide left us with an uplifting quote as we left Kinneret Cemetery.

Cemeteries are here to celebrate lives and should be used as an outlet to tell the inspiring stories of the loved ones that have passed. -Muki Jankelowitz

I ask that you please join us and help keep her spirit alive and share a story about Mariah in the comment section below. Here is my story…

I’ve known Mariah for over 10 years, growing up at The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp is something we both have in common. While I of course remember Mariah as a creative camper, it was when Mariah matured as a staff member that she truly began to shine and our relationship grew. Mariah’s passion for children was both natural and effortless. During the winter months, I would always breathe a sigh of relief seeing Mariah’s summer application. Being blessed with a staff member that was always dedicated, motived, caring and spirited is something I never took for granted. Mariah possessed all of those attributes. No task at camp was too menial for Mariah and regardless of the situation, Mariah took on every challenge as if it meant the world to her. As a Camp Director, there’s nothing more I could ask for in a staff member. Whenever I think of Mariah, the absolute first memory that comes to mind is her ability to take everyday items and turn them into phenomenal theme day costumes, filling her cabin and our camp with smiles and laughter.

Mariah’s most recent accomplishment was during the summer of 2010, winning the Above and Beyond award. Due to her medical situation, Mariah wasn’t able to physically attend camp in 2011, making her our first honourary summer camp staff.

Mariah, your physical presence will be missed but I promise that your spirit will forever live on.

Philip, Raizell and Eli, may you have all the strength in the world during this time of sorrow. The light from the Centre Camp shemesh will forever shine bright with Mariah looking down upon us.

Baruch Dayan HaEmet

I leave you with her last piece of design work for Centre Camp that is a true representation of Mariah – energetic, fun, cheerful and most importantly, a camper at heart.

Today we’re taking a look back at our amazing arts program at The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, brought to us by Koffler Art Director Melina and the Koffler Centre of the Arts! In the summer of 2011, we decided to try something new and unique in the camp
Learn more »

We’re back with another edition of Summer Memories from 2011! Today we’re taking a look back at our amazing arts program at The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, brought to us by Koffler Art Director Melina and the Koffler Centre of the Arts!

In the summer of 2011, we decided to try something new and unique in the camp world – so we joined forces with the Koffler Centre of the Arts, a partner agency of the JCCs of Greater Toronto, to bring our campers the BEST arts, arts and crafts, and Judaic art anywhere!

You may ask: what makes the partnership with Koffler so amazing? Well, our campers got to create amazing things like mosaic boxes, Chagall homages, and unique and beautiful expressions in any medium you can imagine! The devotion and excitement of the Koffler Specialists make every arts period a memorable experience – and there’s always something to bring home at the end of the week.

When it comes to Theme Days, look no further for creative vision than Koffler Arts, Koffler Arts & Crafts, and Koffler Judaic Art for great ideas. From Israel Day flags to Wild Wild West Day sheriff stars, there’s never an end to what a camper might bring home – along with the confidence that they can be artists too.

As Toronto’s best Jewish day camp expands into Vaughan, you can expect the same amazingly high standard of Koffler Arts excellence at both our Toronto and Vaughan locations!

Thank you to our Koffler team and the Koffler Centre of the Arts for the great Summer 2011 Memories, and for giving us yet another reason to say #ilovecentrecamp

Here at The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, we have a great tradition called Survivor. For many years, this has stayed a summer mainstay, but for the first time ever, Survivor was an integral part of Winter Morning Flagpole – and today its first champion was crowned! After an exciting and intense set of challenges, Tsofim counselor Ben became the first-ever Winter Camp Survivor Champion!

Oneg Shabbat
Today is Friday, which of course means Oneg Shabbat! Our famous Shabbat Party featured plenty of songs, stories, and amazing Challah! Not to mention hot chocolate and candle-lighting. Our Winter Camp campers had an awesome time with Dani and Matt for their fantastic Shabbat Party!
